The Boy Who Wanted to Discover the World

Luis was born in Caracas, Venezuela, son of Antonio and María, immigrants from the Canary Islands, Spain. He grew up alongside his siblings Antonio, María, and Rosalinda in a family where he enjoyed a happy childhood.

 

Even as a child, you could catch glimpses of the personality that would stay with him throughout his life. He was restless, curious, and mischievous. His old notebooks are perhaps one of the most charming records of that little boy who meticulously documented his own “experiments.”

 

It would have been hard to imagine that this irreverent young spirit would eventually spend part of his formative years in a seminary.

 

He initially dreamed of studying Marine Biology. But, as so often happens to those willing to explore new paths, life had other plans.

 

One day, he accompanied a friend to enroll in medical school. His friend was not accepted. Luis was.

 

That simple coincidence became the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

 

The Doctor Who Taught Others to Look Beyond the Books

During his medical training, Luis worked as an illustrator for the Department of Histology and Embryology. His dedication eventually led him to become Head of the Departments of Histology and Anatomy, and later to hold the highest academic rank as Head of both Departments at the Central University of Venezuela.

 

His colleagues respected him for his fairness and conciliatory nature. His students admired his particular approach to teaching: he did not simply pass on knowledge. He connected the basic sciences to the clinical practice they would one day encounter.

 

As a surgeon, he was skilled and demanding of himself. As a surgical oncologist, he was also deeply compassionate.

 

To his patients, he was more than the doctor who treated them. He was the professional who knew how to accompany them with empathy and dedication through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. His name remained forever connected to a chapter that changed theirs.

 

 

The Family Man

But perhaps no title describes Luis better than father.

He was a loving and devoted father to his four children, Sergio, Gabriel, Nicole, and Samantha, and a proud grandfather to his seven grandchildren—thus far.

 

Luis taught primarily by example. He did not need grand speeches to pass on his values. He did it through his actions, through the way he treated people, through the way he faced challenges, and through his endless willingness to do.

 

To Mónica, his wife and life partner, Luis was also a romantic and thoughtful man—the kind who found little ways to express his love through everyday gestures.

 

He loved family celebrations. Luis had a natural ability to become the life of the party: enjoying himself, making people laugh, sharing, and gathering the people he loved around him—with a good beer in hand.

 

 

A Life Full of Passions

Luis was never a man of just one passion.

​

Music held a special place in his life. From a young age, he was part of a local band and played the drums with considerable style. His musical taste was as broad as his curiosity: he enjoyed everything from classical music to jazz, Big Band, and rock.

​

The Beatles were his favorite band. And among all their songs, one held a special meaning for him: Imagine.

​

His passion for music eventually became part of one of his own projects, The Crow’s Nest—the record store and radio station—a reflection of yet another side of a man who was always finding new ways to turn his interests into experiences to share with others.

​

He was also passionate about sailing.

​

Whenever he could, he enjoyed the waters and landscapes of the beautiful Venezuelan islands of La Tortuga and Los Roques. His adventurous spirit even led him to cross the Atlantic by sailboat alongside three friends.

​

And then there was running.

​

Luis often said that his best ideas came to him while jogging. Running was therefore much more than exercise. It was a space to think, create, organize his thoughts, and keep dreaming.

​

He took up running enthusiastically at a young age and continued until the very end, training for what would have been his fifteenth New York City Marathon.

Fifteen marathons. Fifteen times facing the challenge of making it all the way to the finish line.

​

A number that, in its own way, tells you something about who Luis was.

 

 

The Man of Ideas

Luis was an entrepreneur by nature. When he believed in something, he worked tirelessly to make it real. He was not someone who simply dreamed—he wanted to turn ideas into action.

​

His magnetic personality was contagious. Those who became interested in his projects often found themselves wanting to participate, contribute, and become part of them.

 

And so, his final great project was born.

​

Port 27.

​

A project to which Luis gave his pride, passion, creativity, and an enormous amount of work.

​

But to truly understand Port 27, you have to understand Luis.

​

Because Port 27 was not simply born from a business plan.

​

It was born from his way of seeing life.

​

From his curiosity.
From his love for people.
From his desire to create.
And from his belief that places gain true meaning when people have reasons to come together.

 

 

His Final Project, Our Commitment

Luis is no longer here physically to see everything he imagined become reality.

​

But his vision remains.

​

His family has proudly, passionately, and wholeheartedly taken on the commitment to continue his final project and honor what Luis set out to build.

​

Because Port 27 is much more than a destination.

​

It is a gathering place.

​

A place where people can come together, share, discover, celebrate, and create new memories.

​

And perhaps that is ultimately part of Luis's greatest legacy: understanding that places are not simply spaces.

​

They are the people who fill them.

​

They are the stories that begin there.

​

They are the memories that remain.

 

 

Luis' Legacy

Some people leave behind memories.

​

Others leave behind a different way of looking at life.

​

Luis was one of those people.

​

He left knowledge in his students.
Hope and companionship in his patients.
Love and values in his children.
Joy and memories in his grandchildren.
Friendship in those who walked alongside him.

And dreams that now continue in the hands of those who loved him.

​

Perhaps that is the best way to understand his legacy.

​

Luis did not simply build projects.

​

He built connections.
He opened doors.
He inspired ideas.
He brought people together.

​

And he left many of us with the desire to keep moving forward, keep creating, and keep dreaming.

​

That is why, every time the doors of Port 27 open, a part of Luis will be there.

​

In a conversation.
In a song.
In a celebration.
In a new idea.
In someone discovering the place for the very first time.

​

And, above all, in every encounter that makes someone feel like they are part of something.

​

Because true destinations are not built solely with buildings, roads, or landscapes.

​

They are built by the people who make them part of their story.

​

And the story of Port 27 will always carry the imprint of Luis Sosa.
